Joint Pain and Acupuncture
Symptoms are mainly characterized by swelling, pain and motor impairment of the musculoskeletal system. In acupuncture, complaints relating to joint pain are referred to as Bi syndromes. The icon for the term “Bi” shows with the inside of the icon meaning “poison arrows” and the outside meaning “a sick person is in bed.” Together they form the concept Bi, “a sick person bombarded by poison arrows from within”. “Bi” has therefore become a wide used term to indicate painful limbs and awkward, stiff movement. Theoretically, wind, cold and vapor are the main cause for a Bi-constitution. It is a sign of obstruction of Qi and blood in the meridians, most likely caused by a weakness on the organ level.
Joint problems caused by wind-cold and wind-vapor are most common. Obviously, people in colder climates tend to suffer more often from issues with the joints and rheumatism.
